I'd forgotten that it's near impossible to find furnished rentals in Australia. So along with the finding a job and somewhere to live, also comes buying all the usual stuff for a house, ALL AT ONCE. Poor ole bank balance. Still, there are a lot of charity furniture places around here that we'll be raiding real soon now.

Things we have so far:
  • house

  • bed

  • fridge/freezer

  • vacuum cleaner

  • BBQ

  • outdoor table for two

  • steamer

  • kettle

  • Australian mobile numbers

  • Things we don't have:
  • jobs

  • car

  • washing machine

  • aircon

  • lawnmower

  • umbrellas

  • every other bit of furniture and household electricals

  • friends

The last item is on the wrong list. They might be far away, but you still have them.

You're right, and it's good to know you're there. It's just an adjustment to realise, for now at least, we're not meeting up with anyone for fizz in the park on a sunny Saturday afternoon!

To be fair, you wouldn't be doing that if you were here, because it's BLOODY FREEZING.

Ah this post speaks to me - there's no such thing as furnished rentals where we're going either. Nor RL friends. At least you're in the (allegedly), friendliest place in the world, hey :)

People, so far, are mostly friendly, which yes is nice! Whether surface-friendly translates to real-friend friendly remains to be seen (a phenomenon seen by friends who moved to the US; everyone will say "hi" but as everyone already has their own groups few will invite you round to dinner. Suspect it will be the same here, but as we're kinda expecting it, that's ok).

Yes, we're bracing ourselves for that too. But it's okay, you guys have each other and that's a pretty awesome starting point - I bet loads of cool people will be moths to the flame!

See, now that's scary... probably because it's given me the image of a horde of some kind of Cool People zombies chasing us down the street groaning "BRAAAAAAIIINNNS"!

I think I've spent too much time on my own lately ;)

My mobile number is the same as it always was, if you still have it. Send me a text with your new number!!

I've dug through my phone and I have one number for you, hoping it's the right one!

I got a message from a random number, and responded calling the sender a bushpig. Now I'm really hoping it was you!!!

Sounds like a great deal of fun! We're gearing up for the opposite, trying to find an unfurnished place and culling a bunch of stuff :)

When I had to go back to renting in the UK after owning my place and having furniture, I did find an unfurnished house, so they do exist!

In what part of Australia are you? You probably said so 100 times, but my memory being what it is...

Good luck with everything, anyway :).

I'm in Brisbane, and it's ok, I'm not sure I've said very often, if at all. I tend to forget what I've said here, on facebook, in email, or in real life to people, so most of my communication is somewhat muddled :)

I know what it's like to move into an unfurnished place. Scarily expensive. At least here in the US the Washer/Dryer and Fridge/Freezer are included so we did not have to buy that.

And rather than buy a vacuum cleaner, we hired a cleaning service...

Thankfully Mum and Nigel have leant us their spare fridge/freezer, so that was one less major expense. We haven't bought a dryer either, just a washing machine and a clothes horse (we probably won't get a dryer, neither of us like the running costs and eco impact of running a dryer regularly, although after using my cousin's recently due to the torrential rain, I do love the super-soft feel of everything that comes out of them!).

Don't you need a vaccuum cleaner for the cleaners to use? Or do they bring their own? In London, I had to provide all cleaning supplies.

I think to justify a cleaner again, both of us need to be working. As much as I'd love to because I hate cleaning the bathroom and other weekly type cleaning chores, I can hardly claim to be too busy to do them (once we've done unpacking anyway, hopefully I'll have a job by then!).

Hmm actually, the vaccuum cleaner's greatest use so far has been to suck up roaches, hornets, and spiders *shudders*. I did deliberately pick a vaccuum cleaner with an especially long reach.
